幹細胞的英文是Stem Cell，而Stem Cell是翻自德文Stammzelle1，是德國生物學家Ernst Haeckel在1868年用來表達所有生物乃源自於單細胞生物2。後來他又用同一名詞來表達一個生物個體的所有細胞都源自於受精卵3。所以，幹細胞的真正意思是“源細胞”。源細胞除了意思正確，它也較文雅，而且不會和“肝細胞”混淆。
